When the Calvary Theatre department took on the show Silent Sky, a play which revolves around the stars, we knew immediately that lighting would be a crucial element in our production. Thankfully, Kaleb Krahn, our Technical Director, is more than up to the challenge! An alumnus of Calvary, Kaleb just finished his M.F.A. in Technical Direction from UMKC last spring and he’s already deep into the heart of Calvary Theatre! Whether he’s designing lighting, building sets, or teaching classes, Kaleb does everything with energy and excellence. I sat down with him after a rehearsal one night as he was programming cues, and got his take on the upcoming production.
As Technical Director, what are your responsibilities in Silent Sky?
Essentially, I oversee the technical aspects of the show. Working with the set designer, building the set, designing and implementing the lighting, overseeing sound design, and coordinating set construction.
Why is lighting important for stage productions?
Well, first off, having light on the stage makes it possible to see what’s going on! Additionally, good lighting design brings life to the set and costumes. It adds dimensionality and brings out colors. Lighting also narrows focus, directing the audience’s attention where it needs to be.
What makes this show unique in terms of lighting?
Silent Sky is very demanding on the lighting side. The show spans over 10 years, and showing the passage of time in a matter of seconds is a challenge. There are also several geographical locations in the script, so representing and differentiating them, as well as the various times of day during which the action occurs, was an important part of the lighting design process.
What is your favorite moment in the show to light?
Either the final moment of the play, or a dream sequence in which we use lighting to draw the audience into the character’s imagination, and then back to reality.
If you want to see Kaleb’s brilliant lighting design, it’s not too late to get tickets! Silent Sky opens this weekend!

Warrior Soccer
Calvary’s soccer team earned their first win of the season last week! They defeated Central Christian College of the Bible by a score of 4-2 with goals from Noah Wittenbach, Mark Rodenberg, and Kameron Wiebe. Their next game is at home on Saturday, October 8. If you would like to come cheer on the team, be advised that the homes games this season are being played at 613 Mill Street in Belton, Missouri. I know Coach Daniel Nichols and the players would appreciate your support!

Fall Work Day
Students work to beautify the area around the new Student Life Center.
Now that the students are settling into college life, it is nice to take a day off from brain work to do some manual labor. On Tuesday students were assigned to various jobs around campus, with a majority of the work being done inside and outside the new Student Life Center. If you have not heard about Calvary’s new acquisition, click here to read more about it. The building was formerly Turner’s German-American Hall, and it is just south of Calvary’s softball field near Eagle’s Landing Golf Course. If you would like a sneak peek at the space before it is renovated, make reservations to attend the President’s Dinner next week.
Students cleaned chairs and the inside of the new Student Life Center.

Lady Warriors’ Volleyball
The Lady Warriors volleyball team has had a fantastic start to their season. With an even mixture of new faces and returning players, the team is working hard for Coach Jeanette Regier and seeing good results. They play two games at home this Tuesday and another one on Saturday, September 24, before several games on the road. If you are in the area, come to the Pyramid Athletic Center and support the team. Yes, you read that correctly; Calvary’s gymnasium is now the Pyramid Athletic Center! Click here to find out why.
Tasha Krahn (#21), Lisa Rensberger (#14), Paige Specht (#3), and Arianna Erixson (#9) wait to receive the next serve at a recent home game.

Christian Ministry Fair
Question: Where could you find thirty churches and ministry organizations in one room?
Answer: At Calvary’s Christian Ministry Fair
Last Thursday, our students had the opportunity to visit with those representing various local churches and get an idea of which one might be the best fit for them. All new students spend their first semester searching for a church, so the Fair helps them form a list of places to visit in person. Besides churches, students could also learn more about some organizations like camps and missions where they could fulfill their Christian Ministry requirements in the future.
