Upcoming Events
I wanted to take this opportunity to invite you to our final fine arts events of the semester coming up this weekend and next. How Great Our Joy is a Christmas concert, featuring Chorale, Evidence, solo, and instrumental performances, taking place this evening at 7:30. Tickets may be purchased at the door.
Tomorrow night is WinterShorts, the new name for our December acting recital, which will showcase scenes (one of which was written by alumnus Kevin Stone) directed by Calvary students. Admission is free, so come join us tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
Today is the deadline to purchase tickets for a Madrigal Dinner on December 9, 10, or 11. You won’t want to miss out on this wonderful combination of food, music, and a Christmas story.
For more information on each of these events, click on the links in the “Upcoming Calvary Events” section below.

Your Phone-a-thon Donations at Work
Back in July, I shared about three of the projects that were funded by the 2016 Alumni Phone-a-thon – tablets for the Admissions Department, the Alumni Induction Luncheon, and the gym floor. At this Thanksgiving time of year, I wanted to be sure to thank you for your generous donations that enabled us to purchase two other important items as well. The new-to-us vehicle pictured below is a blessing to our Security team. They actually get to drive it around, unlike their old vehicle which was always in the shop! We are also thankful for the automated external defibrillator which has been installed in the dorm. A converse sentiment exists for the AED as opposed to the vehicle, though; we hope we never need to use the AED! Thank you once again to each alumnus who gave toward these much-needed projects.

Masterworks Chorus
Last Friday, Calvary students were joined by faculty, staff, alumni, and community singers as the Masterworks Chorus sang Christ lag in Todesbanden and The Seven Last Words of Christ. The performance took place at First Baptist Church of Lee’s Summit and was directed by Jeremy Schell. A string ensemble accompanied the singers along with organist Bethany Franklin. Christ lag in Todesbanden is Bach’s earliest known Easter cantata, and The Seven Last Words of Christ by Theodore Dubois is an oratorio representing significant events in Jesus’ crucifixion.

Learning Center Renamed
At his inauguration this fall, Dr. Cone announced that the Learning Center will now be known as the Clark Academic Center in honor of President Emeritus Dr. James Clark. The center exists to assist all Calvary students with writing, study skills, and time management; their specialty is providing paper editing and Turabian Style formatting assistance. Dr. Terri Stricker is the Director of the CAC, and Ashley Spicer, Philip Parker, Jordan McFarland, Adam Weeks, Celeste Williams, and Karinna Wong serve as student tutors. Dr. Stricker says, “Student tutors consider their assistance a ministry that contributes to the academic development of Calvary students. We are committed to helping students with whatever the problem seems to be, so we may spend time quizzing a student for an upcoming exam, reviewing an essay, or assisting with planning for a research paper. The student tutors are uniquely chosen for their concern for students and for their ability to come alongside other students and encourage them.”

Charles C. Ryrie Lecture Series
Dr. Mike Stallard was the inaugural speaker for the Charles C. Ryrie Lecture Series last week. He spoke in Chapel Tuesday through Friday on the theme of “Scripture, Truth, and Culture.” Dr. Stallard is Director of International Ministries for the Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry. The lecture series was begun this year as a way to start the second half of the semester with spiritual momentum. It was named after the late Dr. Ryrie because of his ability to communicate doctrine and theology simply and clearly while helping people put the truth into practice in their daily lives. Dr. Stallard modeled that for us last week.

Silent Sky
Last weekend our Theatre Arts Department presented the play, Silent Sky. They brought to life the account of Henrietta Leavitt, who discovered how to measure the universe without ever looking through a telescope. Junior Christy Stone played Henrietta and also designed the set for the production. The small cast of five students and large crew did a marvelous job taking us back to the early 1900s and telling a little-known story.
