President’s Dinner Celebrates 85 Years of Calvary

President’s Dinner Celebrates 85 Years of Calvary

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Last Thursday nearly 200 people gathered at the Memorial Station in Belton for Calvary’s annual President’s Dinner.  We enjoyed delicious prime rib from Silber Spoons Catering to celebrate our eighty-fifth anniversary.  We also listened to the Chorale sing two songs and watched a presentation about Calvary’s history.  In his Presidential Address, Dr. Cone looked back to the founding of Kansas City Bible Institute and a quote from Dr. Walter Wilson which referenced Luke 14:28. “For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it.”  Dr. Wilson saw KCBI as a tower, and Dr. Cone reminded us that the tower is not finished yet.  There are still more men and women to train for the Lord’s service.

Dr. Cone gave the Presidential Address.

The evening’s offering went toward student scholarships.  We were blessed to hear testimonies from three students while sixteen others assisted the caterer with set-up, serving, and clean-up.  Randy Grimm presented the Hand-in-Hand award to Calvary alumni Dr. Mark and Brenda Pearson because of the financial support they have provided for many students over the years.

Soccer Team Battles Together

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

One of the places where Calvary’s increased enrollment is most visible is the soccer field.  In the past, there were years when we wondered if there would even be enough players to have a team.  This year we actually have substitutes for players who need a break or get injured.  What a blessing!  At this point, the Warriors are still seeking their first win of the season, but Coach Daniel Nichols is seeing improvements in each game.  On Tuesday, the team plays at home (613 W Mill, Belton, MO) against Ozark Christian at 4:00 p.m.  I know that they would appreciate your support.

The 2017 Lady Warriors volleyball team currently has a record of 5-1 (1-0 MCCC).  As you can see, they are off to a strong start!  The women are led by first-year head coach Ashley Spicer and seniors Paige Specht, Tasha Krahn, Alyssa Splitter, and C.J. Lewallen.  They played their first conference match of the season on Tuesday evening at Ozark Christian College and came away with the victory in four sets.  Today they travel to take on Barclay College in Haviland, Kansas, and will return home to face Manhattan Christian on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.  I would encourage you to head out to the Pyramid Athletic Center (our gym) to cheer for the Lady Warriors.  They are a fun team to watch!

Students Serve in the Community

Students Serve in the Community

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Last weekend Calvary’s Student Missions Committee participated in their first outreach event of the school year.  The Belton Fall Festival took place on Main Street, and Calvary students volunteered as a way to serve the local community.

Students Elizabeth Viens and Sarah Stewart helped with breakfast.

They helped with setting up on Friday and serving a pancake breakfast on Saturday.

Moriah Roberts, graduate student, flipped pancakes.

Students also monitored a children’s activity, handed out free water at Calvary’s booth, and assisted with clean-up.

Joshua Paxton, Intercultural Studies Professor, and Tim Willis, member of the Student Missions Committee, carried bottled water to the Calvary booth.

Helping with this event each year is a good way to be intentional about reaching out into the surrounding community.

Ministry Opportunities Abound

Ministry Opportunities Abound

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Christian ministry is a vital part of life at Calvary.  Students are required to find and faithfully attend a local church.  After choosing a church home, students must spend their remaining semesters involved in evangelism, ministry at a local church or organization, and service which relates to their academic major.  Christian ministry allows students to apply what they are learning in the classroom and prepares them for future service.

In order to assist our students in the search for a church and/or a place to serve, Calvary hosts a Christian Ministry Fair each fall.  Yesterday we had more than twenty churches and more than ten organizations represented on campus.  Students, especially new ones, had the opportunity to meet and gather information from friendly pastors and representatives.  It is our desire that this fair established some connections that will lead to growth and ministry for God’s glory.
