Winter Life at Calvary

Winter Life at Calvary

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Winter at Calvary can be lots of fun!  When it snows, there are good sledding hills close by, and, of course, a few snowball fights.  Snowmen often appear on campus after a snowstorm.  In fact, I have fond memories of helping build a huge one during my junior year at Calvary.  This week the students went ice skating at Crown Center which has become an annual winter tradition.

Students Callie Weeks and Esther McRae made a snowman on Thursday.

I helped build this massive snowman in front of the men’s dorm back in 2001.

However, winter also has a downside.  Ice is common in Kansas City, and this winter we have had several days of cold temperatures with wind chills below zero.  Snow may be fun to play in, but driving in it is not, especially if students are not accustomed to it.  Please pray for our students’ safety this winter.  This is also the time of year when colds and flu tend to hit the Calvary family.  Pray that our students, faculty, and staff will be restored to good health or avoid the “bug” all together.

Job 37:6  For to the snow He says, “Fall on the earth,” likewise to the downpour, His mighty downpour.

New Dining Hall is a Dream Come True!

New Dining Hall is a Dream Come True!

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Calvary has dreamed of a new dining hall for years now.  On Monday, January 8, 2018, those dreams came to fruition!

Building Acquired

On September 8, 2016, Calvary acquired the building which was formerly Turner’s German-American Hall.  It is located just south of Calvary’s softball field near Eagle’s Landing Golf Course.  The main goal was to remodel the space and move the dining hall to this new location.

Joe’s Kitchen Opens for Business

While there are still a few tasks to accomplish before the remodeling project can be called “complete,” we were able to pass inspections and receive permission to begin serving meals when the students returned to campus for the new semester.  On Wednesday, we had Chapel in the new dining hall and took time to praise and thank God for this building.  Randy Grimm announced that the kitchen will be named “Joe’s Kitchen” in honor of Joe Dapra, who is faithfully serving as Director of Food Services for the twentieth school year.  We look forward to many more chocolate chip cookies, eggs made to order, and Taco Tuesdays in this new facility!

We took time to praise and thank God for this building during Chapel on Wednesday.

Randy Grimm presented Joe Dapra, our Director of Food Services, with a mock-up of the sign that will designate “Joe’s Kitchen.”

Serving area

Since the equipment for the serving line has not arrived yet, students served themselves on Wednesday.

You Can Help

Besides the modern kitchen and spacious eating area, we are also excited about the potential for hosting special events in this building.  This year’s Alumni Phone-a-thon will fund the purchase of a sound system, multimedia screen, and projector to be used at these events.  If you are interested in contributing to this project, click here.

J-Term Enrollment Highest in Years

J-Term Enrollment Highest in Years

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Fifty-five students have participated in this week’s J-Term classes.  That is the highest J-Term enrollment in many years.  While many of the students came back to campus to attend these classes, some viewed the sessions online.  J-Term is beneficial for students looking to lighten their course load in the future by taking one class this week before all the others start.  The flexibility of online participation is an added bonus!  The courses offered this week were Bible Study Methods/Hermeneutics, Counseling Cross-Culturally, American Military History, Music Technology, Introduction to Philosophy, Ethics, and Conflict Resolution.

Dr. Gromacki taught Bible Study Methods/Hermeneutics.

Ken Tibberts taught Counseling Cross-Culturally.

Dr. Bitner taught American Military History.

Dr. Cone taught Ethics.

Dr. Hessel taught Conflict Resolution.

Joel Williamson taught Introduction to Philosophy.

Jeremy Schell taught Music Technology.

Happy New Year from Calvary University!

Happy New Year from Calvary University!

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

We are thanking God for what He did in 2017 and looking forward to what He will do in 2018!

Psalm 98

1 Oh, sing to the Lord a new song!
For He has done marvelous things;
His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.
The Lord has made known His salvation;
His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations.
He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
Sing to the Lord with the harp,
With the harp and the sound of a psalm,
With trumpets and the sound of a horn;
Shout joyfully before the Lord, the King.

Let the sea roar, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell in it;
Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the hills be joyful together before the Lord,
For He is coming to judge the earth.
With righteousness He shall judge the world,
And the peoples with equity.
