Calvary Soccer Earns First Win of 2018 Season

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Wade Smith (#12)

In their ninth game of the season, the men’s soccer team earned their first win defeating Barclay on the road by a score of 2-1.  The Warriors had lost by only one point in three previous games, and Coach Daniel Nichols believed that his team was on the way to victory in Haviland.

Ian Montgomery (#4), Masaki Ouchi (#6), and Joshua Tomlinson (#15)

The team will head west to Barclay again for the Midwest Christian College Conference Tournament in two weeks.  In the meantime, they have a home game on Tuesday, October 16 against Kansas Christian and a road trip to Manhattan Christian on October 18.  Please pray for safety as they travel and compete.

Celebrating God’s Blessing at the President’s Dinner

Celebrating God’s Blessing at the President’s Dinner

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Last Thursday almost 200 people joined us for the annual President’s Dinner.  The theme for the evening was “Celebrating God’s Blessing!”  After dinner the program began with two songs by the Chorale.

The Calvary Chorale sang Kum Ba Yah.

Then we presented Hand in Hand Awards to Bill and Debi Keeney and Graham Union Church for their tremendous support of Calvary.

Dr. Cone announced two recent, huge blessings.  First, we have 401 students enrolled in classes right now!  Second, Calvary has been approved to offer a PhD in Bible and Theology launching in January 2019.  Following Dr. Cone we heard testimonies from three students as well as reports about God’s blessings in the Athletic Department, Colorado Innovation Center, and Kansas City campus buildings.

Student Tori Stahr gave a testimony.

The evening concluded with the first performance of Calvary’s new music group, lux voces.  We are thankful for each person who came to celebrate with us and for the students who served in various capacities throughout the event.

Volleyball Team Enjoys Stretch of Home Matches

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Calvary’s volleyball team has just finished seven straight home matches.  They earned two victories and five losses during this homestand.  Coach Ashley Spicer’s team has dealt with some injuries this season, and overall they are a young team.  The Lady Warriors now embark on road trips to Joplin, Missouri; Lincoln, Nebraska; Haviland, Kansas; and Manhattan, Kansas, before returning to Joplin for the MCCC Tournament at the end of October.  Please pray for safety as they travel and compete on the court.

Piano Dedication Concert Celebrates Gift

Piano Dedication Concert Celebrates Gift

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Sarah Bourdess, graduate student, played Sonata Op. 109 in E Major.

Last Friday Calvary dedicated the grand piano and piano microphone which will be used for chapel services, concerts, and recitals in Liberty Chapel.  Through this Dedication Concert we acknowledged the generosity of Mrs. Inci Bashar, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Winkley, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kelly, and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Silvers.  We are extremely grateful for their gifting of this instrument, and we look forward to using it for God’s glory for years to come.  Praise the Lord for His provision!

Program

The concert consisted of performances by Un Chong Christopher, Sarah Bourdess, and Dr. Mark Strozier.  Mrs. Christopher, an Associate Professor of Music here at Calvary, played two solo piano pieces as well as accompanying Dr. Strozier and playing a duet with Sarah Bourdess.  Dr. Mark Strozier played three flute pieces.  Sarah Bourdess is one of our graduate students, and she played a solo and a duet on this special gift.

Dr. Mark Strozier played Cantabile et Presto accompanied by Un Chong Christopher.

Christian Ministry Fair Introduces Students to Opportunities

Christian Ministry Fair Introduces Students to Opportunities

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

On September 6, representatives from more than thirty churches and ministries gathered in Liberty Chapel for the Christian Ministry Fair.  New students were introduced to many local churches.  This is extremely helpful as they are just starting to search for a body with whom to worship and fellowship.  Since Calvary requires eight semesters of Christian Ministry for a four-year degree, the fair was also a great time to check out all of the opportunities for serving the Lord through a church or ministry organization.  Students were encouraged to visit with at least ten different representatives during the fair.

ConnectFest Draws Community to Campus

ConnectFest Draws Community to Campus

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Last Friday’s ConnectFest was a brand new idea for serving our local community.  We are estimating that 700 people were on campus throughout the course of the 10-hour event.  While we definitely enjoyed seeing alumni and friends of Calvary, it was extra wonderful to welcome those who have never set foot on this campus before.  What a fun introduction to our school!

Friendly faces welcomed guests to ConnectFest.

Free Fun

ConnectFest was like a carnival and a community festival all rolled into one FREE day of excitement.  Attendees were given 20 free tickets to play carnival games and win prizes.  There were also more than a dozen rides, inflatables, and other attractions that young and old could do for free.

Trackless train ride

Slip ‘n’ Slide

Bubble soccer

Vendors and local businesses set up booths to sell their items or promote their services, and they did not have to pay any fees to participate.  Several local churches also used this opportunity for community outreach.

Music, Food, and Fireworks

Josh Freerksen sang on stage.

No festival would be complete without live music, and we had plenty!  Calvary students, Blue Ridge Christian School students, and local artists performed on an outdoor stage.  We also enjoyed spoken word, drama, dance, poetry, and comedy mixed into the performance schedule.  Terry Magelssen, a Christian illusionist, performed a show that was enjoyed by all ages.  Of course, I can’t forget to mention the delicious food that was available to purchase from various food trucks.  To top off a great day, we had a 13-minute fireworks show!

Thank You

Thank you, Lord, for holding back the rain and providing a breeze on a hot day.  Thank you, Admissions Team and ConnectFest committee, for all your hard work in dreaming up, planning, and implementing this BIG IDEA!  Finally, thank you, volunteers, for running games and rides, picking up trash, handing out tickets, giving out prizes, etc.  This event would not have been such a success without YOU!
