New Students Have Arrived

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

I very much enjoy New Student Registration Day!  It is fun to meet all the new members of the Calvary family and find out which ones are children of alumni or siblings of other students.  It is also exciting to meet new students, who had no previous connection to Calvary, and hear about how God led them here.  Please be praying for our new students as they settle in to Calvary life.  Some of them are far from home for the first time.  Some will need prayer for good time management as they take classes and work or take classes and play sports.  You can pray that all of them will form strong friendships during these first few weeks.  Finally, pray that each of them will “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 3:18)”

Preparations for a New School Year

Preparations for a New School Year

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

With new students arriving in less than one week, another school year seems to be hurtling toward us!  That is why our faculty and staff spent Thursday in meetings focused on preparations for the upcoming semester.  Dr. Cone encouraged us from God’s Word, and the other members of the Cabinet gave reports from their respective departments.

One bit of news that I would like to pass on to you is about our enrollment numbers.  We are praising the Lord that more than 315 students are currently registered for classes in Cycle 2*!  Thank you for your prayers in that area.                *Calvary’s academic year is now structured into 8-week cycles.  Cycle 2 is August 28-October 20.

We are also excited about the progress being made on renovating the former seminary building into the new home of the Hilda Kroeker Library and Clark Academic Center.  In addition to that project, we anticipate that work will soon begin on transforming the Student Life Center (formerly Turner’s German-American Hall which we purchased last fall) into our new dining hall.  Please pray with us for safety, quality work, and timely completion.

Dr. Cone spoke to the faculty and staff on Thursday.

New Weekly Email Coming to Your Inbox

New Weekly Email Coming to Your Inbox

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

Let me start by saying, “Thank you!”  Thank you to all of the alumni and friends of Calvary who have opened, read, and sometimes responded to my Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life email each Friday.  Connecting with you on a regular basis is one of the best parts of my job!

If you have been receiving my Weekly Portraits, you should receive a new Calvary University Weekly email in your inbox on Monday, August 21.  You should have received the email the past two Thursday evenings.  This email will contain links to several articles posted on our website.  Dr. Cone has decided that this will be a good way to consolidate Calvary emails, so you will not be receiving a separate Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life email on Fridays anymore.  There should be a link in the new Monday emails that will take you to the Weekly Portrait that I have posted on the website.

Since I won’t be able to greet you in your inbox each Friday as I have done for the last nine years, please consider the new Monday email to be your map for finding my new location.  If you are reading this, I hope it means that you will continue to take that extra step of clicking the link in order to read my updates.

Dr. Braga to Direct Seminary Biblical Counseling Program

Dr. Braga to Direct Seminary Biblical Counseling Program

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

For those who attended Calvary in the last ‘90s and early 2000s, Dr. Joaquim Braga is a familiar face.  He is a fun-loving Brazilian who earned his bachelor’s degree and M.Div. from Calvary.  Joa and his wife, Connie (Arbeiter CTS05), then moved to Texas where he earned an M.A. in Biblical Counseling and a Ph.D. in Family Therapy.  Since 2011, Dr. Braga has been traveling to Calvary periodically to teach as an adjunct professor.

We are thrilled to announce that Joaquim is now stepping into the role of Seminary Biblical Counseling Program Director.  One of the reasons we are so excited about Dr. Braga is how he is using his biblical counseling skills to impact the world for Christ.  In October, Joa, Connie, and their children will be moving to Brazil to live out the gospel by counseling and teaching individuals, couples, and families.  Dr. Braga feels that there is a good plan in place for him to direct the program while living and serving in South America.  It will involve God’s help, of course, plus hard work, administrative support on campus, technology, and some trips to Kansas City, but Joa has big dreams for growing the program for God’s glory.

Click here to find out more about the Prepare/Enrich Certification Workshop that Dr. Braga will be leading in September.  This is for anyone who works with couples in a pre-marital or marriage context.  You must sign up and pay by August 30.

Nikaó Leadership Institute Set to Launch

Nikaó Leadership Institute Set to Launch

Weekly Portraits of Calvary Life

In just a few weeks the Nikaó Leadership Institute will begin its first year of training men and women to be quality leaders.  Calvary is introducing this new initiative as part of our mission to prepare students to live and serve in the church and the world according to a biblical worldview.  Each year a limited number of incoming freshmen will have the opportunity to enter the Institute.  In addition to their regular college classes, NLI students will participate in a yearly Leadership Summit and weekly breakout sessions.  They will also be required to serve in leadership positions both on and off campus to earn Nikaó points.  As they serve, a mentor will seek to provide guidance and accountability.  Besides the valuable leadership development, students who successfully complete the NLI requirements each semester will earn a tuition scholarship.  Click here to learn more about the Nikaó Leadership Institute.
