The Calvary University Warriors were defeated by the Kansas Christian College Falcons 58-79 on Tuesday night in Overland Park. Because of the close location and similar mission that both schools share, they play each other often, but tonight Kansas Christian had the upper hand.

The Warriors entered the game with a 2-2 record after beating Providence University College this past weekend.

The game started fast for Calvary as they grabbed an 8-2 lead. The first half was back and forth as neither team was able to gain control. The Falcons started pressing right before the break and it allowed them to take a seven point advantage into the locker room at the half.  During the second half Kansas Christian turned up their pressure and forced Calvary into numerous possessions without a shot. Calvary had 24 turnovers for the game. “We must get better at handling pressure,” Coach Sanders said. “That will be our focus moving forward.”

Zeb Green and Jay Lems were the story for the Warriors. Zeb tallied 21 points while shooting 6/10 from the field and 8/10 from the free throw line. Jay added 14 points while shooting 4/10 from behind the arc. Ben Jones added some quality minutes that were big in the first half as well.

“We played really hard at the beginning of the game,” Warrior forward Zeb Green said. “Although we still have a lot of work to do it is awesome to see how the team never gave up on each other no matter what the scoreboard said.”

With the loss, the Warriors move to 2-3 on the season. Next up, the Warriors will be on the road in Hot Springs, Arkansas on November 27 for a matchup with Champion Christian College.

Terrific defense and clutch free throw shooting helped the Warriors defeat NCCAA North Region opponent Providence University College 87-75 on Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, MO.

“We made them take some really tough shots in the second half while holding them to 35 points,” Coach Matt Sanders said. “They made a run at us to take the lead with eight minutes to go. After that timeout at the eight minute mark our defense was really good.” Providence shot 41% from the field for the game. Jay Lems, Zak Kirkman, Braydon Unruh, and Zeb Green all made critical free-throws down the stretch to preserve this victory for us today.”

“We learned a lot about ourselves”, said Sanders. “We need to continue to get better at sharing the basketball offensively. We need to make the extra pass and get easier shots. We gave up some critical offensive rebounds in the second half. We must improve that. We are looking forward to another chance at improving and seeing what this team can do next Tuesday as we play Kansas Christian College. They are athletic and shoot the three extremely well.”

The Warriors were led offensively by Jay Lems. He was 6-9 from behind the arc. Zeb Green contributed a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Braydon Unruh was just short of a triple-double with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists.

The Warriors move to 2-2 on the season with the victory and will have a short Thanksgiving break after their Tuesday matchup in Overland Park.
