Warriors Win 3-0

Calvary University Volleyball won their first match of the season with an impressive 3-0 sweep over Union College Tuesday night. “Practice this week was focused on serves and serve receive,” said Coach Ashley Spicer. “It really showed against Union. We had our best serving percentage of the season tonight.” In the opening set, both teams came out fighting to gain momentum. The Lady Warriors were able to gain the advantage with smart plays and by excellent kills, winning the set 25-20.

In the next two sets, both teams fought hard, but Calvary was able to continue their momentum with excellent serving and improving their overall hitting percentage. Despite Union’s attempts to come back, Calvary finished 27-25 in both of the final two sets. Both Leah Grady and Tori Veltkamp were difference makers, leading with 6 kills each. Anna Holloway also led the team with 4 aces, 2 solo blocks, and 20 digs.

The Lady Warriors will next travel to Haviland, Kansas to take the court against Barclay College on Friday.

The Warriors were looking to continue the momentum from last weeks win over Barclay College when they faced Union College Tuesday night in Lincoln, Nebraska. Instead, the Warriors came up short losing 0-2. Calvary started the game strong. They created a few good scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the game, almost taking an early lead with a shot on a goal by Noah Wittenbach. “We battled and fought very hard in the first half,” said Coach Daniel Nichols. “We especially did a good job transitioning the ball from defense to offense.” Union College took a 1-0 lead over Calvary scoring off a rebound in the 25th minute.

The Warriors had a strong start to the second half once again. Despite creating good scoring opportunities, the Warriors were unable to find the back of the net. Calvary’s limited bench played a factor in the second half, with Union getting strong play from their bench in the second half. Union scored their second goal of the game off of an intercepted pass extending the lead to 0-2. “I was really encouraged by the effort that the guys put forth tonight.” Coach Nichols said.

Calvary will look to rebound this Friday at home against Nebraska Christian College.

Warriors Struggle In Minnesota

The Lady Warriors volleyball team dropped both of their matches on Saturday as the team fell 25-20, 18-25, 18-25, 18-25 to North Central University, and 17-25, 15-25, 22-25 to Trinity College. This moves the Warriors to 0-2 overall on the season. 

“I am proud of how my team responded and played hard to the finish,” Warrior Head Coach Ashley Spicer said. “It was a great day for us to learn and improve. It took a little time for our new players to adjust to the speed of the game at this level, but as the matches moved forward their comfort level improved as well.” 
 
In the first match against NCU, Kennedy Shelton and Esther Schwarze both gave the Warriors huge momentum swings with serving runs.  Great serving made each of the sets close, but NCU edged CU out in the fourth set 1-3. 

In the match against Trinity, the Warriors came out slow.  Serve receive was problematic at the start of the match, but some significant improvement was seen in serve receive production and percentage as the sets moved forward.  “Tori Veltkamp and Anna Holloway both had some terrific hustle plays in this match that set the tone for us defensively,” Spicer stated.  “We will use these types of plays to continue to define who we will become as the season unfolds.”  

“We played against some good teams today,” Spicer said. “We hope we can compete at this level by the end of our season.”

The Warriors didn’t disappoint as the team defeated Barclay College 6-0 on Saturday afternoon in Haviland. “It was a fantastic day,” Coach Daniel Nichols said. “I have to give credit to our guys as they came out ready to play.  We did a lot of good things.”

 

The Warriors entered the match with a 0-1 record after suffering a tough loss to Nebraska Christian College on Tuesday.  The energy was high on the Warrior team as they prepared to take the pitch against a determined Barclay team. 

                                                                                                                                                                                              The Warriors began to find their rhythm at the start of the game as they controlled the ball in the attacking third. They were creating numerous opportunities, but were wasting some due to a lack of communication.  In minute 18, Chad Unruh hustled to a 50-50 ball and played it through into space while outrunning his defender.  He was able to shoot and find the back of the net on an unassisted goal to put CU up 1-0. 

Calvary closed out the first half with two more goals in minute 26 (Oscar Palofax) and  minute 43. (Noah Wittenbach assisted by Oscar Palofax)                                                                                                                                                 

“At the half we talked about improving our communication and finishing,” stated Nichols.  “We also wanted to focus on closing the game out defensively.  In the second half we maintained good procession while attacking on all flanks. I am quite pleased with our progress.”                                                                                                                                       

The Warriors added three more goals in the second half.  In minute 74, Oscar Palofax found open space in front of the net and buried a shot off of an assist by Noah Wittenbach and Samuel Cocha.  Two minutes after that Clay Williams found the back of the net on an un-assisted goal.  And then in minute 88, Noah Wittenbach finished a brilliant strike assisted by Clay Williams and Samuel Cocha to capture the 6-0 win. 

 

“We fixed some mistakes from our last game,” said Senior Midfielder Masaki Ouchi. “Our passing improved today and we scored six goals. We missed Aedan, but we are praying he can recover quickly.”

 

The Warriors finished with 37 shots.  Tyler Bungard was able to get his first shutout at the GK position.  Micah Wildasin had a fantastic clear off the line to keep the shutout in order when the score was at 5-0 towards the end of the game.

Calvary Earns Second Highest Team GPA in Country

It was a banner year for Division II basketball program Calvary University as the NCCAA released their annual Winter/Spring 2018-19 Scholar Teams. To be eligible for this award, teams needed a minimum grade point average of 3.40 on a 4.00 scale for all combined student-athletes on the team.

 Southwestern Christian University’s women’s basketball team took the lead this year with a 3.78 team GPA, as Calvary University followed closely behind in second place out of the 31 teams that received national recognition.  The Lady Warriors collectively achieved a 3.74 team GPA to receive this honor.

 “What we’ve seen across our level of basketball is the importance of the student in the term student-athlete,” Head Coach Tressa Shoemaker said. “One of the most important things we can do is to promote an environment where we foster growth in the classroom and in turn, develop the next generation of teachers and leaders to continue that mindset.”

 “We seek to recruit highly motivated ladies who are academically driven to be great,” said Shoemaker.  “They love the Lord and are seeking to grow in their relationship with Him above all.  They care about their classes and their degree with all that they have, they are highly motivated, they have a high GPA, they are selfless and sacrificial, and they display a great work ethic.”

 “Our program and our recruiting have both been carefully designed for excellence in all areas,” said Shoemaker. “Here are the pillars of what we strive for in the classroom.

  1. We advocate for our Academic Center.
  2. We implement mentors, study groups, and accountability.
  3. We put teammates together in classes to help motivate and encourage each other.
  4. We think studying is important.
  5. We educate on our academic standards.

 “I am proud of this team,” stated Shoemaker. “They have taken a lot of ownership in what we’ve asked them to accomplish both on and off the court.  Every girl on this team had a choice to make each day to take responsibility for their academics. Some of these ladies told me that they were making it a goal to do better in the classroom than the previous semester. That showed dedication and sacrifice for themselves and for their teammates. They desired to strive for excellence and to make sure they wouldn’t let their teammates down. The future is exciting for the ladies in this program.”
